April 13, 2010 • Congressman Childers Visits J.T. Shannon Lumber Co

The J.T. Shannon Lumber Company was proud to be a stop on U.S. Rep. Travis Childers' “Jobs and Economy Tour” of Mississippi's First District. The Congressman chose to visit our 30-acre hardwood flooring manufacturer because of our steady employment numbers and green initiatives.

Since our arrival in DeSoto County in 1982, J.T. Shannon Lumber Company has been a consistently strong part of the local economy. "We're proud to see people like Mr. Shannon (President/CEO Jack T. Shannon, Jr.) and his family employ 170 families," said Childers, in a statement to the Commercial Appeal. In addition to employing local labor, J.T. Shannon Lumber Company also uses lumber from local hardwood sawmills, including a facility located in Childers' home county of Prentiss, MS.

International Sales Manager, Jack Shannon III, Executive Vice President Jim Garrard and General Manager Rudy Weaver accompanied the congressman on his tour of the facility, and explained our company's commitment to green practices. “There's a lot of misconceptions about the lumber industry,” said Weaver, who has been with J.T. Shannon Lumber Company for over 14 years, “but it was good for Childers to see that we are good stewards of the forest and that we do value our raw materials and our products."

“Hardwood floors are a highly sustainable resource,” adds Shannon. “They last for decades with minimal care. When you factor in our low-waste manufacturing processes, they are a very environmentally friendly choice.”

We were honored to introduce Congressman Childers and his staff to our facility, our fine products and our exceptional team, who make us so proud.
